Preschoolers celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through stories and art

Children’s Corner Preschool students are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with meaningful and engaging learning experiences!
At CC-Pond, Brianna Berrocal’s class journeyed into her Costa Rican heritage, learning about the nation’s incredible wildlife. One exciting moment came when the class listened to the distinctive sounds of howler monkeys, sparking curiosity and excitement. Students explored the colorful patterns and intricate designs commonly seen on Costa Rica’s beautifully decorated traditional oxcarts before creating their own versions using crayons.
At CC-Farm, Dawn Genteel’s class listened to “Pepe and the Parade,” a lively story that introduced them to the excitement of a Hispanic heritage celebration. Building on the story, the class learned about the flags of several Spanish-speaking countries, then carefully colored their own flags, added creative touches.
Kimberly Hipko’s class at CC-Farm explored the colorful and exciting tradition of piñatas through the delightful book “The Perfect Piñata” by Kelli Kyle Dominguez. The students then designed and created their own one-of-a-kind piñatas on paper, for a hands-on experience that blended literacy, art, and cultural appreciation.
Emily Laurie’s class at CC-Farm explored the colorful story “What Can You Do with a Paleta?” “Paleta” means popsicle in Spanish, and students enjoyed learning how this sweet treat can be part of everyday life and culture in Latino communities. After the reading, they brought their ideas to life by designing their own colorful popsicles with tissue paper and using glue sticks for the very first time.
These celebrations and many others introduced our youngest learners to the beauty and diversity of Hispanic cultures and gave children the opportunity to build cultural awareness of the rich and vibrant Hispanic heritage.
